Spur Swimming Pool not accepted for Pepsi grant project

Posted on Monday 3 May 2010

If you want to vote for Spur Swimming Pool in the online Pepsi Refresh Project, you will have to wait at least until June 1 after the application submitted by Joyce Howze on behalf of the City of Spur was not accepted for May voting.

Many people went to the website http://www.refresheverything.com last weekend to cast their vote for the pool, but were unable to find it among the projects listed. When contacted to find out what happened, Howze told The Texas Spur that the project was not accepted. She said that the deadline for submitting the application was midnight May 1, but she wasn’t aware that 100 runners-up from the previous month’s contenders would be transferred to May for voting to give them another shot.

Howze explained that the application process works on a “first-come, first-served basis” and submissions begin the first of the month at 12:00:01 a.m. ET and end at 11:59:59 p.m. ET on the 15th of the month or when the first 1,000 applications are received, whichever occurs first. Since Spur didn’t appear, Pepsi must have reached their limit of 1,000 applications before the idea for Spur Swimming Pool was received which means the Refresh Project must have received more than 900 new entries for May.

Howze said she plans to resubmit the application for the pool next month.

“I don’t see this as a total loss because we can reapply,” said Howze.

She intends to use the picture that people turned out for at the pool on April 24 for other grant applications the city intends to pursue. She sees the fact that so many people turned out for the photo as a huge success, because it shows that people support the pool project.

“When people unite for a common cause good things always happen, and I can see our community uniting for this,” said Howze.

A grant from Pepsi would cover half the minimal amount of $441,000 proposed for replacing the pool with one of the same size and repairing the bathhouse. The remainder of the funding would come from other grants and even donations. A fund has been established by the Friends of Main Street at Spur Security Bank to accept donations for the project. For more information on contributing to the project contact Joyce Howze at 806-271-4392 or the City of Spur, 806-271-3316.
