Spur ISD board approves resurfacing of track

In its regular monthly

meeting on Thursday, Sept. 24 the Spur ISD Board of Trustees approved a budget amendment to resurface the track at Jones Stadium. A motion was made by Roy Sanchez and seconded by Barry Ferguson to approve the budget amendment as presented for the resurfacing of the track, and the motion passed 5-0.

Stonewall Memorial appoints radiologist, completes RV park

The regular board meeting of the directors of Stonewall Memorial Hospital District (SMHD) was held Monday, Sept. 24, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. Present were Sandy Mullen, Irvin Brooks, Martha Jones and Belinda Page. Bill Hill was absent.

Mullen called the meeting to order and the board approved the minutes of the Aug. 27, 2018 regular meeting.

The Kent County Commissioners’ Court convened their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018. Present were: Jim White, County Judge; Roy Chisum, Commissioner, Precinct One; Don Long, Commissioner, Precinct Two; Daryl Ham, Commissioner, Precinct Three; and Robert Graham, Commissioner, Precinct Four. Kent County Clerk Craig Harrison was absent.

The minutes of the previous meeting of Sept. 10 and the public hearing of the same date were presented and approved without amendment.

As we settle into fall and begin cooking and baking some of our autumn classics, most of us tend to crave the flavor of freshly picked apples. I typically look for ways I can incorporate seasonal flavors into regular dishes and baked goods each season. New York-style crumb cake is a favorite, even in Texas, and this one goes two-stepping with cinnamon glazed apples! What better way to infuse fall flavor? A freshly baked crumb cake is always a special treat for a holiday brunch. And you can’t beat it for a scrumptious snack with coffee.

Watson to resign from library effective Dec. 31

The Friends of the Library Board met Monday, Sept. 24 at the Dickens County-Spur Library. Present were Larry Rapier, Gladys Hinson, Beth Rumbaugh, Ineta Cannon, John Schmidt and Library Director Merla Watson.

The meeting began with a reading of the minutes from the last regular meeting. Cannon made a motion to accept the minutes as presented, seconded by Hinson. Motion carried.

Watson tendered her resignation effective Dec. 31, 2018. Rumbaugh made a motion to accept Watson’s resignation, seconded by Cannon. The motion carried with one vote against.

Act now to reduce next year’s grassburs

Texas Spur reader K.E. of Spur asks for information about sandburs since they are abundant this year in Spur. This inquiry was timely because the time to act on next year’s pesky spring and summer weeds is now. This year has been an especially good one for sand burrs (if you are a weed) but hard on animals and humans because these weeds are everywhere. The seeds are scattered vast distances since they cling to anything in the vicinity—clothing, tires, animals, shoes, lawn mowers; they even float on water.

What do you do with a voice like that?

The Gamma Eta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International held their Oct. 1, 2018 meeting in Matador. Fifteen members and two guest enjoyed a meal served by the executive board.

Chelsea Read of Matador facilitated a program entitled “Bridging to a Healthy Lifestyle” at the Grundy’s pool. Read shared water aerobics exercises which fulfilled one of the Texas State Organization’s goals for the 2017-2019 biennium: Encourage healthy living strategies for our members and their families.
