Jayton Jaybirds selected for numerous honors

This past week, Texas high school athletics organizations recognized eight members of the 2019–20 Jayton Jaybirds basketball squad, for district and state honors. Of the eight, Hunter Gilbert, Aaron Hernandez and Tye Scogin are graduating seniors. Mason Long, Tripp Scott, Pecos Smith and Caleb Valerio are juniors, while Nathaniel Williams is a freshman.

Slidell, Slayton ‘slay’ at state

TOWERING TROUBLE 6 foot-6 inch Slidell senior center Slayton Pruett was an ever-present obstacle to the Jayton Jaybirds’ efforts in Thursday’s state basketball tournament playoff game. Shortly after Jayton lost the state semifinal to the Slidell Greyhounds 45-28, UIL officials announced that due to growing concerns over COVID-19 (coronavirus), the remainder of the UIL boys’ basketball state tournament was suspended until further notice.

South Plains Electric Cooperative offers teacher mini-grants for 2020–21 school year

Lubbock-based South Plains Electric Cooperative, Inc., has announced they will select 10 teachers from around the area to receive $500 minigrants to help fund studentbased projects or educational field trips in the 2020–21 school year.
