Barbara J. Horn, 1942–2024

Barba r a J. Horn died peacefully in her home surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren on January 3, 2024 in Spur, Texas, at the age of 81.

Barbara was born on August 15, 1942 in Graham, Texas, to Marlin “Sam” Marshall and Mrytle Sweeney. By a chance meeting on the highway and whirlwind courtship of six months she married her husband of 58 years, Jim Bob Horn, on July, 25 ,1965. After moving to the house, she made a home in Spur, she and Jim began their long life of growing cotton, cattle and boys. Barbara and Jim Bob welcomed two boys, Mark and Chris, into their home and set about teaching them skills needed in life and farming. Her children remember her as a kind and driven mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Jim Bob, of Spur; two sons, Mark, of Trinidad, Colorado, and Chris and wife, Rachel, of Spur; five grandchildren, Joel of Katy, Texas, Athena and husband, Ian, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Austin of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Eoin of Spur and Liam of Montgomery, Alabama; two great-grandchildren, Hazel and Milo of Cleveland, Ohio; and two brothers, Marlin Marshall and wife, Francis, of Irving, Texas, and Jimmy Marshall of Graham, Texas.

She was preceded in death by parents Marlin “Sam” Marshall and wife Mrytle of Graham, Texas.

Barbara was an active and dedicated member of the Spur Methodist Church and often volunteered wherever she was needed. She was Momma to some, Nana to others and Auntie to the rest, and there was never an empty coffee pot, a missed meal, or a lack of conversation to be had at her kitchen table. Her love to cook, bake, and care for others and her love for her friends was only surpassed by her fierce love and devotion to her family. Grandchildren, nieces, nephews and adopted strays always received love, advice and a stern hand should they decide they were too big for their britches. Although she was small in stature, her leaving of this world will leave a big hole to fill.

A memorial is scheduled for Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Spur Methodist Church in Spur, Texas. Rory Mosley, known by Nana as “Roy,” will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Barbara’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Spur Methodist Church. The family would like to thank everyone for their love and prayers during this time of loss.
