Darrell Mack Thomason, 1933–2024
Darrell Mack Thomason, 90, of Spur, Texas, was born to Irelia McNerlin and Floyd Earl Thomason on December 24, 1933, in Levelland, Texas. He passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, in Jayton, Texas.
Darrell attended school in Spur, where he met his sweetheart when they were just 8 years old. Darrell married Ina Putman on June 10, 1951, at the Putman home in the Highway Community.
Darrell and Ina moved to Hereford in 1952, and began their farming career. While living in Hereford, Lynette, Kenneth and Kirk were born. The family moved to Spur December of 1962, purchasing the first of many cotton farms, the Old Home Place. Lisa was born after they were settled in Spur.
Farming was Darrell’s life purpose. He loved to plow the land, plant cotton seed and check the fields. Starting out early in his career, Darrell farmed while working at the cotton gin, driving a laundry route two days a week, and working at a gas station at night. He worked diligently through the years to build up a cotton business that he and Ina could be proud of. Another source of pride was Darrell’s dedication to Dickens County through his service as Precinct 4 county commissioner for six terms.
A true testament of a man is the dedication and love he had for his wife and family. Without a doubt, Darrell was a loving husband and a father all of his days. Until Ina’s death, if you saw Darrell you saw Ina. They were never apart. After 72 years of marriage they were inseparable. Even in illness, he continued to lovingly care for Ina until the end of her life.
Survivors include his children, Lynette Cheyne of Aspermont and Kenneth Thomason, Kirk and Kathy Thomason, Lisa and Scott Martin, all of Spur; grandchildren Amy Richardson of Guthrie, Jodi and Ricky Martinez of Abilene, Justin and Sonya Cheyne of Tuscola, Monty Thomason of Spur, and Tristen Martin of Lubbock; greatgrandchildren Makenna and Vance Parsons of Wolfforth, Hanna and Toni Ortiz of Lubbock, Hallie Richardson of Lubbock, Paige Gonzalez of Lubbock, Landry Cheyne of Tuscola, Landon Richardson of Guthrie, and Raylee Cheyne of Tuscola; and great-great-grandchildren Witten Parsons and Liam Parsons of Wolfforth.
