Harold “Dean” Shaw, 1932–2024
Harold “Dean” Shaw, 92, of Slaton, Texas, passed away on December 11, 2024.
Funeral services were Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Sl a ton Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.
Dean was born the seventh of 14 children, on August 23, 1932 to F. G. and Vivian (Hadaway) Shaw in Robertson, near Lorenzo, Texas, where his dad farmed. Dean went to school in Dickens, Texas, and left to go to San Diego, California, and worked for Solar Aircraft. After getting his draft notice, he went home to join the Air Force.
He met his wife Laura (Marie) Talbott, and they were married on April 10, 1954. They had three children and he worked with them in 4-H and FFA. He kept stats and ran the chain at their football games. He was recognized both at county and state level as a 4-H leader, receiving the Friend of 4-H and the Silver Spur awards.
Dean worked at many jobs. He kept books at the gin, ran service stations and grain elevators, as well as being a government trapper until 1965 when he started ranch fencing, and continued for the next 20 years. He then drove an 18-wheeler between Lubbock and Dallas loaded with mail for the next 12 years. He ended his career as maintenance man for the Slaton Care Center. He retired the last time at the age of 80.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, seven brothers, and his grandson Danny Baxter.
Dean is survived by his wife, Marie; his daughter, Deanna Creager and her husband, Jeff, of Slaton; his sons, Clif Shaw and his wife, Suzanne, of Slaton and Cary Shaw and his wife, Mary, of Idalou; his sisters Lillie Mae Davis of Spur and Flora Lee Nixon of Vega; his brother, Dennis Shaw, of Aspermont; nine grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren; and his nieces and nephew.
The family suggest memorials be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, Slaton Methodist Church, or the Senior Citizens Center of Slaton.
