James Newton Kidd, 1936–2023
James Newton Kidd, or “Bud” as he was fondly known, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023. A service to celebrate his 87 years of life is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, followed by a time of fellowship with family and friends. Pastor Richard Harbison of LifePoint Lubbock will officiate. Born on March 28, 1936, in Spur, Texas, he was the loving son of the late Joseph Martin and Annie Pauline (Turner) Kidd. He married the love of his life, Nan L. Alexander, on August 1, 1955.
Throughout his life, Bud had an unwavering dedication to providing for his family and making lasting contributions to his community. After completing his education, he entered the oil and gas industry, progressing from roustabout to welder to construction inspector. Taking life as a great adventure, he worked in New Mexico, California, Colorado and Texas. He raised his children in Crane, Texas, and was often cheering on the Golden Cranes in whatever challenge they faced.
Not content to just work in the U.S., Bud accepted a position with ARAMCO Oil and spent ten years in Saudi Arabia. This position allowed him and Nan to travel the globe, experiencing different cultures and many wonders of the world. His favorite places were Holland, Greece, and Hong Kong. Upon retiring from the oil field, he became an over-the-road long haul driver. He and Nan traveled the United States from coast to coast.
He had a strong work ethic, hardly missing a day of work, and he believed he was defined by the work he did. He was a man of his word and stood by his beliefs. He volunteered to help in working on churches and missions in the communities of New Cuyama, California, Crane and Spur.
Bud loved to fish and tell tall tales. A person knew the punchline to the story was near when his devilish grin appeared. He spent many wonderful summers at Lake Buchanan with family and friends on vacation. He delighted in being with his family, especially his grandchildren with whom he made funny faces and played ghost games.
Bud’s passion for his work was only surpassed by the love he had for his family. He took tremendous pride in being a devoted father to his daughter, Korbi (Mason) Berryhill, and his son, Trent (Carole) Kidd. He was also a loving grandfather to Lydia (Dusty) Duke, Jason Roberts, Bekka Berryhill, Lexi Berryhill, and Landon Roberts, and greatgrandfather to Ethan, Ella, and Maverick Harris.
Beyond his family, Bud cherished his relationships with his siblings. He leaves behind Tennie Fry, Lee (Alice) Kidd, Ineta (Harvey) Cannon, Dana (Bill) Smith, and Barry Kidd, who all remember him fondly for his kindness, wisdom and enduring support.
He now joins his wife, Nan L. Kidd, whom he missed every day; his parents; and siblings, Sherrod Lynn Kidd and Peggy Jolene Waddell.
To honor his memory, the family kindly requests any charitable donations to be made in Bud’s name to the American Heart Association.
As we bid farewell to Bud, let us remember him for the way he lived his life with integrity, determination, and a deep love for his family. He will be sorely missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
