Huley Newton “Pete” Day

Huley Newton “Pete” Day, 98, passed away on April 17, 2019 at his home in North Richland Hills, Texas.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Egbert and Della Day; his wife of 63 years, Delpha Atkins Day; his second wife of 7 years, Mary Campbell Day; and 12 siblings.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Rick Mayfield of Roanoke, Linda and Gary Gilbert of Keller, and Cathy and Eddie Isbell of Ponder; sister Virginia Barnhill of Merkle; brother Curtis Day of Tulia; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pete was born in Dekalb, Texas on Feb. 25, 1921. A lifelong Texan, he entered the Army Air Corp in October, 1942. He was honorably discharged in June, 1945, after he had been held as a POW in Germany for 18 months.

Pete married Delpha in March of 1946 and farmed for two years before moving to Spur in January of 1949 and working for Wilson and Young Lumber Co. In 1960, he moved to Lubbock with his wife and three daughters, where he worked for a lumber yard; in January of 1964 they moved back to Spur. He and his cousin Leo Day opened Day and Day Building Supply. He retired from the lumber yard in 1983 and enjoyed golfing, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and was a member of the Methodist Church.

In 2002, he and Delpha moved to Fort Worth to be near their daughters. They lived at the Wellington Independent Living Apartments where he met and married Pat after Delpha’s death. He resided there until his death.

Pete was a very special, caring and loving person. He had high standards he set for himself and his family. He enjoyed games, especially cards and dominoes. He was a rock for so many people and has touched many lives. He will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday April 20, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Spur, followed by interment at Dickens Cemetery under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home.
