Maria Bustos Garza 1925–2020

Maria Bustos Garza, 94, of Spur, Texas, passed away on February 2, 2020, in Immokalee, Fla.

Maria was born in Santa Anna, Texas, to Guadalupe Gonzalez Bustos and Ramona Hernandez Mejia on November 27, 1925. She married Miguel Garcia Garza on December 9, 1940, in Robstown, Texas, and they were happily married for 77 years. Maria was a devoted housewife and mother. She was involved in De Colores Marriage Group and a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spur. She and her husband, Miguel, were founding pioneers of Gopher’s Ridge, Fla., to be later recognized as Immokalee, “my home.”

Maria is preceded in death by Miguel Garza (husband), Roberto Garza (son), Maria De Jesus Garza (daughter), Sulema Olivarez (daughter), Gloria Perez (daughter), Magdalena Olivarez (granddaughter), Jose Perez, Jr. (grandson), Ruben Garza, Jr. (grandson), Linda Crystal Sanchez (granddaughter), Christian Michael Sanchez (great-grandson), Kimberly Jade Garza-Olgin (great-granddaughter), Julie-Ann Nevaeh Garza (greatgranddaughter), and Alexus Garcia (great-granddaughter).

Maria is survived by Eloy Garza (Nancy) of Spur; Ruben Garza (Ofelia) of Spur; Maria Margarita Garza of Immokalee, Fla.; Miguel Garza, Jr. (Sofia Esther) of Immokalee, Fla.; Juan Garza (Leticia) of LaBelle, Fla., and 49 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren, and 24 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday, February 14, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spur, with the Father Selvanayagam officiating. Burial will follow at Spur Cemetery. Arrangements are by Zapata Funeral Home.
