Jim Guess, 1944–2022
Coleman — Jim Guess, age 77, of Coleman, died Thursday, October 20, 2022, at his residence. The family will host a time of visitation and reflection from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 27, 2022, at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street in Coleman. The funeral service will be private. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.
He was born James William Guess on November 20, 1944, in Grapevine, Texas to Cecil “Pete” Guess and Viola Millican Guess. Jim grew up in Grapevine and graduated from Grapevine High School in 1963. He then attended East Texas State University, where he was president of the rodeo association, graduating in 1967. Jim served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded an honorable discharge. He married Ann Davis on January 19, 1974, at the First United Methodist Church in Coleman. Jim worked for the USDA Soil Conservation service for twenty-five years, working in Itasca, Waxahachie, Claude, and Jayton. He retired in 1993 andopenedGuessWeldingand Trailer Repair in Coleman.
Jim was a leader and worked hard for his community. He was a 4-H adult leader, a member of the Lions Club in Itasca, Waxahachie, Claude, and Jayton. Jim served as president of the Kent County Junior Livestock Association and was president of the Stonewall-Kent County Farm Bureau. He was awarded Outstanding Citizen of Kent County. Jim also served on the Jayton- Girard Independent School District School Board for many years. He was a member of the Texas Hereford Association, advisor of the Texas Junior Hereford Association, advisor of the year for the American Junior Hereford Association, the Coleman Rodeo Association, and was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Coleman.
Jim enjoyed grilling and barbecuing and passed that skill down to his son Reid and grandson Brayden. He loved his family and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed.
Preceding Jim in death are his parents, Pete and Viola Guess; two brothers, Billy Guess and Bobby Guess; one sister, Linda Kincaid and husband, John; and brother-inlaw, Gary Chappell.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ann Guess of Coleman; his grandson, Brayden Baldwin of Coleman; one son, Reid Guess and wife, Sara, along with their children Elliot and Emmi, of Waco; one daughter, Haley Turner and husband, Ruben, along with their son, Remmy, of Lampasas; one sister, Sue Chappell of Grapevine; special aunt, Betty King of Weatherford; his cousins, Eddie Lynn King of Weatherford, Cheryl King of Fort Worth, and John David Guess of Fort Worth; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested in memory of Jim to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford Street, Abilene, Texas 79605, the Coleman County Youth Activity Center, P.O. Box 766, Coleman, Texas 76834, the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 852, Coleman, Texas 76834, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
