Sylvia Belle Hinson Rogers Young, 1935–2023

Sylvia Belle Hinson Rogers Young passed into the next life November 24, 2022. She was born April 29, 1935, to Vurl Alvin and Jewel Belle Yeates Hinson in the farming community of Afton, Texas, where she attended and graduated from Patton Springs School. In 1950, she married Raymond Gerald Rogers and had 2 sons, Gerald Wayne (Gerry) and Terry Bruce. They divorced in 1979. The family had moved in 1960 to Burleson, Texas, where she later worked for Alcon Industries in Fort Worth, retiring after 25 years.

On June 12, 2010, she married a former Patton Springs schoolmate, Kenneth Young, at his home on the outskirts of Fort Worth, where they resided. They traveled often to Glen Rose, Texas, to their small weekend getaway place so that “Memaw” could visit family, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren, and attend their sports and other events.

Her favorite hobbies included collecting small windmills and turtle figurines. She enjoyed feeding and watching a small herd of deer that arrived at their home each evening. Sylvia had a passion for watching basketball, especially the Spurs and the Clippers. Her schedules were always handy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vurl and Belle Hinson; sister, Betty Jean Baxter; and brother John Alvin Hinson.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Young; son Wayne Rogers (wife, Belinda); son Bruce Rogers (wife, Sherri); stepdaughter Teresa Young Nunley (husband, Alan); stepson Randy Young (wife, Nancy); six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be on held on Sylvia’s birthday, April 29, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Spur, 120 W. 2nd St., with Michael Adcock officiating. Family and relatives will gather for a meal at noon at the church beforehand. A short graveside service will follow immediately after at the Afton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Spur or Afton Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 36, Afton, TX.
