Recent weeks have brought big changes to staffing at the Kent County Nursing Home during challenging times for hiring—but soon a nearby native will be returning to the area to head up the team.
The Palace Theater will show its first movie of the season, “Godzilla vs. Kong,” during a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Concessions will open at 1:30 p.m. This movie offers a special discounted admission for high school and junior high students of only $2. Adult admission is $5.
Spur welcomes the classic country sound of the Fabulous Sandbillies for a performance following the Big Dog BBQ Cook-off on Saturday night, June 26. The Texas foursome will kick off their show at 8 p.m. at Swenson Park. Admission is free for all ages, with reserved tickets available through the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce (spurchamber@gmail.com or on Facebook).
CLEAN UP DAY Last week Spur volunteers came together and helped clean up the city. Some volunteered their time. Some volunteered their trucks. Some volunteered their brawn. Junk and trash from around town were hauled to the dump and beautified the city.
Naturally, I love to cook in the outdoors, so camp cooking is exciting to me. Planning, and precooking, when necessary, makes mealtime that much more enjoyable. It always takes me back to my Girl Scout days in Blanco Canyon. And food seems to tastes better prepared outside, particularly after a long day of hiking and fishing.
Pollinator Week is being celebrated the week of June 21–27. This event is observed annually across the globe in an international intent to spread the word about protecting our pollinators. It is a week dedicated to the appreciation of the diverse populations of pollinators and encouraging the public to support pollinator health and what can be done to protect them.
After a six-year stint as pre- K–12 principal of the 175-enrollment Jayton Schools, Lyle Lackey has been named principal at Decatur (Texas) High School, an institution with more than six times Jayton’s enrollment in high school alone.
The teams are set, the brackets are finishe and all that’s left is to hope that no rainouts occur in the ninth annual Adult Softball Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Spur Little League Park.
