Spur community picks Fall Fest King and Queen winners

On Saturday, October 25, Spur ISD’s Class of 2023 hosted the Fall Fest King and Queen contest. Fall Fest jars were distributed to local businesses for the last couple of weeks to start gathering votes. The jars were on a rotation among the five businesses. The votes were counted, with one cent equaling one vote, the morning of the contest. The candidates gathered in the Spur ISD Cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. to begin the ceremony. The Class of 2023 introduced the candidates and crowned the winners of each division. The elementary school winners were Khloee Segura and Hazen Hall. The Junior High School winners were Kyiara Walker and Tyler Garza, and the high school winners were Erin McGalliard and Josh Ortiz. The class of 2023 would like to thank everyone that voted and contributed towards another successful Fall Fest King and Queen Contest.

Early voting begins Oct. 24

Early voting in the Nov. 8 general election begins Oct. 24 and runs through Nov. 4. Applications for voting by mail must be received by Oct. 28, according to the secretary of state’s office. Texans are eligible to vote by mail if they are 65 or older; sick or disabled; are expected to give birth within three weeks of Election Day; will be absent from the county where they vote during early voting and on Election Day; or are in jail but otherwise eligible. If voting by mail, Texans are urged to carefully read the instructions before putting their ballot in the mail. More than 12% of mail-in ballots were rejected in the March primary for not complying with tighter voting regulations enacted in the last legislative session, according to kut.org. Meanwhile, the latest poll shows the race between Gov. Greg Abbott and Beto O’ Rourke has tightened since the Sept. 30 debate between the two, the Corpus Christi Caller Times reported. The latest poll by Marist College shows Abbott’s lead has dropped to 4 percentage points.

Jaybirds finish Jags at the half

Itwasadominanteffort by the Jaybirds that took advantage of the mercy rule Thursday night to defeat the Guthrie Jaguars 60-8 at the half. The game was a one-sided affair the entire night that saw the Jaybirds outgain the Jaguars 258 yards to 123 yards, outnumber the Jaguars 10 to 4 in first downs, and lead the turnover battle 3-0. The lone blemish on the night was to allow a first-quarter kickoff return for a touchdown. The rest of the game was Jaybird total domination. Rushing leaders for the Jaybirds were Ayden Salazar and Bode Ham, who each carried the ball three times for an identical 76 yards and a touchdown apiece.

Golf Scramble Results October 11. The weather was absolutely perfect for the golf scramble this week. There were enough players to make up five teams by randomly drawing individual golf balls out of the bucket. Two places were paid out. Rolling back to the clubhouse and claiming the firstplace money for the week was the team of Tyler Luke, Janie Day, Aubrey Luke and Wes Joplin, with 4 under par and a score of 32. Taking home the secondplace money for the week was the team of Eddie Clark, Floyd Starkey, Larry Bass and Cammie Walker with 3 under par and a score of 33. A huge shoutout goes to Dana Conrad, with her beautiful drive landing 33 feet 9 inches from the cup on the No. 8 hole to claim those winnings for the week! Way to go, Dana! No one landed on the No. 1 hole, so that money pot continues to grow. We will only have a couple more scrambles before this year’s Scramble Time Tuesday season ends on November 1. Come out and join in on the fun!
