Coop assets purchased in Kent sheriff’s sale April 4

A sheriff’s sale of assets formerly held by the Farmers Coop Gin in Jayton yielded $143,092 into county coffers April 4, according to Kent County Appraisal District chief appraiser Cindy Watson.

Sylvia Belle Hinson Rogers Young, 1935–2023

Sylvia Belle Hinson Rogers Young passed into the next life November 24, 2022. She was born April 29, 1935, to Vurl Alvin and Jewel Belle Yeates Hinson in the farming community of Afton, Texas, where she attended and graduated from Patton Springs School. In 1950, she married Raymond Gerald Rogers and had 2 sons, Gerald Wayne (Gerry) and Terry Bruce. They divorced in 1979. The family had moved in 1960 to Burleson, Texas, where she later worked for Alcon Industries in Fort Worth, retiring after 25 years.

Tuesday, April 18 tax deadline

This year, the filing deadline is April 18 for most taxpayers, but automatic six-month extensions of time to file are available for anyone for free. See Extension of Time to File Your Tax Return for instructions. Taxpayers should be aware that filing Form 4868 only extends the time to file tax returns. writing this week’s column from Florence, Texas, my thoughts are all over the place. I am coming up short for a certain theme, story, commentary,or feature. Much like the vehicle I drove last week, I am all over the place. Not a good place for a columnist to be who must be mindful of word limits. Focus is seldom my companion.

Spur ISD board approves volunteer security officer in March meeting

In the regular monthly meeting of the Spur Independent School District board on March 27, trustees voted to accept the volunteer security services of a retired peace officer under Texas Education Code 37.087 to allow the officer to carry a firearm for the protection of Spur ISD students, staff and visitors as such places and times as determined by the district’s administration.

Kent looking to hire new nursing home director, other staff positions

BARBARABRANNON | TEXAS SPUR In its most recent regular and special meetings of March 27, April 6, and April 10, Kent County officials have grappled with strategies for managing the county-owned Kent County Nursing Home, including recruiting a director for the facility. An interim director has been in place since March, and an outside firm has been advising on a range of improvements in billing and hiring processes.
