This srpring a group of local residents attended the Jayton-Girard Independent School District board meetings to give public comment on the possibility of Jayton fielding a baseball team in UIL 1A high school athletics.
It’s been five years since Lubbock television station KCBD (Channel 11) brought its hugely popular Community Coverage summer tour to Spur— but the station has confirmed it’s selected Spur for the Tuesday night of its 2022 event, on July 26.
Anyone who stops in casually for a weekday lunch at the Senior Citizens of South Dickens County (often simply called the Spur Senior Center) might not realize the considerable planning, maintenance, preparation, and execution that goes into this healthy, convivial mealtime.
GRASS FIRE OUTSIDE SPUR On Saturday, May 21, just after noon, a grass fire was reported in area of FM 1081 and FM 261 west of Spur. Area resident Tommy Carruth shared photos with The Texas Spur Facebook page to keep property owners apprised. Several local volunteer fire departments responded, in addition to the Dickens County Sheriff’s Office and TxDOT. By about 4:15 p.m. Spur VFD chief Wess Abbott reported the fire under control: “We have the fire contained and have released all departments from the scene except Spur VFD and the Texas Forest service. We are continuing to establish fire guards.” Thank you to all responding units!
The Spur Senior Citizens Center, located at 210 Burlington Ave., will be serving a noon meal Monday through Friday. The dining room is open, or if you feel more comfortable during the Covid-19 pandemic, we are offering a curbside lunch you can reserve by calling (806) 271-4472. A donation is always appreciated. The cost for seniors over 60 is $4; everyone else is always welcome, for $8.
Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in June the library will be hosting programming for the children of the community through the Collaborative Summer Reading Program.
What an exciting time this is, as we head into summer, vacations, camping, and gardening. I’m thinking about farmers’ markets, fresh ingredients, and developing healthy, beautiful recipes from the bounty.
