About Bob Wills Day and the Bob Wills Foundation in Turkey

For 50 years the Bob Wills Foundation in Turkey, Texas, has endeavored to preserve the legacy of the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills.

Thanks to a few individuals in the early 1970s Turkey was able to celebrate Bob Wills before his passing and be a small part of his legacy for years to come.

Dr. Charles Townsend, the last living founder, continues the work of these individuals today preserving and celebrating the legacy of Bob Wills and bringing thousands of people to Turkey on the Last Saturday in April.

50th annual Bob Wills Day kicks off April 28

The official dance lineup for the 50th annual Bob Wills Day is all set, after postponement due to Covid-19. Organizers hope fans of Western Swing music will “Stay All Night, Stay A Little Longer” in Turkey, Texas, the last week of April. They’ll be posting daily from now until the festivities kick off on April 28, so stay tuned for even more announcements and information.

Texas Writes, a statewide program from the Writers’ League of Texas that brings accomplished authors to rural libraries for a half day focused on the craft of writing, will be in Spur Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Dickens County-Spur Public Library.

Bob Wills Day 50th Anniversary week events get underway

THINGS ARE JUMPIN’ IN TURKEY, TEXAS this week as the city of some 400 residents prepares to welcome thousands of visitors to celebrate the legacy of former Turkey resident Bob Wills, the “King of Western Swing.” Businesses like Willy’s on Main Street will roll out the red carpet for dancers and fans of musicians such as Jason Roberts and Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys, Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys, Jake Hooker and the Outsiders, Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition, Asleep at the Wheel, and the South Plains College Western Swing Band—and those are just the headliners. Three official days of events kick off Thursday, Apr. 28, but jam bands, fiddlers, and other musicians start rolling out the tunes throughout town a week ahead of time. In today’s souvenir Section B, you’ll find the full schedule, and a map to keep handy.
