Dickens commission approves providing demolition of Spur buildings for new fire department

In the regular meeting of the Dickens County commissioners court on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022, the court voted unanimously to utilize Dickens County personnel and equipment for demolition of old buildings in the City of Spur in preparation for a new Spur fire department headquarters. Dennis Wyatt, an owner and donor of one of the properties under consideration, abstained from voting.

Deadline to file for area city councils, school boards Friday, Feb. 18

Friday, Feb. 18 is the last day to file to run for city hall in Dickens, Jayton and Spur, or school board in Spur and Jayton. Patton Springs ISD is on a November election cycle and their filing dates are in the fall.

LITTLEST LION Kaden Carter (right), a 5th grader at Jayton-Girard ISD, attended the Kent County Lions Club meeting Feb. 14 as “Superintendent for a Day,” shadowing JGISD superintendent Layne Sheets throughout his daily tasks, including a visit to commissioners’ court. Carter presented a brief school report to the Lions Club and afterward said that his favorite subject was math, that he considered it important for students to “stay connected, and learn things they didn’t already know.” Carter said that during his shadowing experience he gained insights into “how to handle the reins, and helping people.”
