The Spur Area Chamber of Commerce will be presenting its monthly Third Saturday Trade Day on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Show Barn in Swenson Park with a variety of vendors, selling interesting finds and delicious foods. Set-up is at 8 a.m. and the trade day gets underway at 9 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m.
LITTLEST LION Kaden Carter (right), a 5th grader at Jayton-Girard ISD, attended the Kent County Lions Club meeting Feb. 14 as “Superintendent for a Day,” shadowing JGISD superintendent Layne Sheets throughout his daily tasks, including a visit to commissioners’ court. Carter presented a brief school report to the Lions Club and afterward said that his favorite subject was math, that he considered it important for students to “stay connected, and learn things they didn’t already know.” Carter said that during his shadowing experience he gained insights into “how to handle the reins, and helping people.”
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office provided an annual report to the Kent County Commissioners Court in January. Calls for service from January 1 through December 31, 2021 are itemized below, for a total of 1,056 calls during the year.
AUSTIN—Mail-in ballot applications for the March 1 primary are being rejected by almost 40% — largely because of a missing ID number, which is now required after a new voting bill passed the Legislature last year.
JAYTON NHS CEREMONY The Jayton High School National Honor Society inducted four new members into the chapter last week: Cadence Kitner (new member), Daylee Chisum (new member), Caleb Chisum, Harley Smith, Brynn Yanez, Joel Williams, Alana Croft, Ben Blankenship, Isaac King (new member) and Nathaniel Williams (new member).

Voters began showing up at polling places on Valentine’s Day to cast ballots in partisan primary elections—and some were caught by surprise, by the number of races at every level through statewide and, on the Republican side, 10 nonbinding questions regarding policy matters.
DISTRICT CHAMPS The Jayton Jaybirds boys varsity basketball team and the Lady Jays girls varsity basketball team were both undefeated in district and each won their district championships. The Lady Jays have already won their first playoff game, defeating Crosbyton at Lubbock Roosevelt Monday night to win the bi-district crown.
FINAL WIN The Spur boys basketball team defeated Guthrie Monday night 68–65 in Guthrie. It was the last regular game of the season for both teams, and both teams have made the playoffs.
