Longtime Spur Ag Teacher inducted into Hall of Fame

Bill Gregory, who taught Vocational Agriculture at Spur schools from 1953 to 1979, was recently inducted posthumously into the 2022 Class of the Hall of Fame of the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas. The induction ceremony was held July 28 during the organization’s convention in Corpus Christi. According to Gregory’s daughter Betty Reding, Spur High class of 1963, Gregory taught a generation of Spur students, many of whom still live in Dickens County. “His teaching partner for his last 10 years was Kermit Wooley,” she said. “He mentored quite a few ag teachers. Texas Tech sent him a lot of student teachers to train.”

Texas Spur Country teachers return to school; students next week

Teachers and staff for Texas Spur Country returned to school this week. Students start back next week. At Spur ISD, staff development began Tuesday, Aug. 9 and runs through Tuesday, Aug. 16. Spur will host Jayton in a football scrimmage, Friday, Aug. 12. There will be an open house on Monday, Aug. 15. The Open House will be 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for sixth graders, and the rest of the classes will be 6 to 8 p.m. Students startschoolWednesday, Aug. 17. Meet the Bulldogs will be Friday, Aug. 19. At Jayton ISD, staff training also began Tuesday, Aug. 9 and continues through Tuesday, Aug. 16. WHAT’S HAPPENING JAYTON POOL’S last day of swimming will be August 14. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 1 to 6 p.m. and Sunday 2 to 6 p.m. The Jayton Pool will be available for pool parties from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at a cost of $150. At the 142nd convention of the Texas Press Association, July 28–30, in San Marcos, The Caprock Courier, The Floyd County Hesperian-Beacon and The Texas Spur were among almost 80 Texas daily, semi-weekly, and weekly newspapers receiving annual awards for outstanding journalism in 18 categories in nine divisions ranked by circulation size; of these, 53 were weeklies in six divisions.
