Spur students compete in local chess championship

For the past two months, a new club has been meeting at the Spur school to play chess. The group meets on Monday afternoons in the cafeteria for practice and over the board games. Spur Chess has upcoming matches with other teams, and plans to play in area tournaments as they reinstituted following Covid-19 shutdowns.

Last week Spur seniors and sponsors headed to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida for the Spur Senior Trip.

Spur alum receives Hardin-Simmons award

ABILENE—Spur High School graduate Julie Beth Ferguson was awarded the J.L. Cole Scholarship at the Hardin-Simmons Social Work Banquet on April 29, 2021.

JAYTON GIRL SCOUTS

Girl Scout Troop 7115 delivered donations of cookies as appreciation for the heroes of our community last Thursday. The girls collected these “Cookies for Heroes” donations from customers during the spring sale and honored some of those community heroes that serve and care for our town and county residents. Those honored were the Kent County EMS, the Kent County Sheriff department and the Kent County Courthouse staff. Girls also plan to deliver future donations to the Kent County rural health clinic staff, the local food pantry volunteers, and the Kent County senior citizens program staff.
