Spur’s Madison Givens with missions group in Tanzania

Last week, Spur’s Madison Givens, valedictorian of the Spur High School Class of 2021, travelled across the globe with Baba’s Glory, a non-profit ministry that operates worldwide. The mission group has been in Arusha, Tanzania. Locals have been able to follow photos and updates on the Spur First United Methodist Church Facebook page. Givens is slated to return from Africa on July 8.

SUMMER BASKETBALL The Spurettes varsity girls wrapped up their summer basketball the last week in June. They played 10 games in two days at New Home, and in total played 35 games this spring and summer.

LEADERSHIP LEARNING Members of the JGISD school board attended the Texas Association of School Boards’ Summer Leadership Institution to learn ways to better serve JGISD students and the community. School Board members are BJ Baldridge, Amanda McGee, L’Rae Lee, Jeff Arnold, Cody Stanaland and Cody Scott; superintendent is Layne Sheets.

SMOKEY IN SPUR The USDA Forest Service brought a special guest to the Spur Library the last week in June for the Summer Reading Program. Smokey the Bear was on hand to greet youngsters as the forest service told the story of a young cub decades ago in New Mexico sparked a national movement about preventing forest fires.

Gamma Eta members represent chapter at Denton conference

Five members of the Gamma Eta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International attended the Texas State Organization’s 92th Convention, “Unlocking the Possibilities,” in Denton, Texas, June 16-19, 2021. Those attending the convention were Debbi Ball, Spur; Sharon McDougle, Crosbyton; Terri Egerton, Lubbock; Jean Williams, Lubbock; and Janie Wigley, Allen, Texas, formerly of Crosbyton. Benny Ball, Spur, accompanied Debbi Ball on the trip.

FOOTBALL AT WAYLAND Ethan Parsons of Spur, who played on the 2019 Bi-District Championship Spur Bulldogs football team, will be playing college football this fall. Parsons is a 2020 SHS graduate and currently a sophomore at South Plains College, has been signed by Wayland Baptist University in Plainview to play football this fall.

JAYTON #9 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has predicted Texas Spur Country’s Jayton Jaybirds to be the number 9 team in the state in 1A-Six Man football. Strawn, featured in its own TV show on the CBS All Access channel, now Paramount channel, is No. 3 in the Class 1A Division II poll behind topranked Motley County and Richland Springs. Balmorhea is the defending state champion, after beating Richland Springs in the title game in 2020.
