In the last few weeks or so you may have noticed on social media a young man selling books to help himself through school. He stopped into the library one day and I got to meet him. His name is Nikita Vlassenkov, or as he is known on Facebook, Nikita Bookman Vlassenkov.

Motley-Dickens Reunion & Rodeo honors pioneers, showcases cowhands, encourages youth

Motley and Dickens Counties have been sharing an Old Settlers Reunion & Rodeo for lots of years now, and the 98th annual event took place last weekend in just about perfect outdoor weather. Crowds were steady, too, and according to Dickens County judge and board member Kevin Brendle, “a good turnout of sponsors this year with at least 70 throwing their support” to the event.

Spur’s City Hall, while already struggling to fill slots in its police department and city works, has found itself dealing with another key vacancy this week after the employment termination of city secretary Lisa Forman. And to top it off, city offices have been closed to the public this week due to Covid-19 quarantine precautions City offices will reopen Friday.

Throughout the Rolling Plains area, hospitals and clinics have recently put new measures in place to combat the spread of Covid-19 and to treat patients who have been sickened by the virus and its variants. Genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2 have been emerging and circulating around the world throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, and recent U.S. media reports cite the Lambda variant as one to keep an eye on.
