Organizers expect at least 30 yard sales along Highway 70 Saturday

As of Monday, 20 yard sales have been reserved for the Spur, Dickens and Jayton areas for the Highway 70 Yard Sale on Saturday, May 7, according to coordinator Joan Day. Day said she anticipates Shane Jones from the Variety Store in Matador to have at least 10 more sales reserved in the northern part of the Highway 70 Yard Sale.

Jayton ‘Big Event’ set to go May 17

One of the area’s largest community improvement projects has been happening every May in Jayton since 2014. “The Big Event,” the brainchild of the late Mike Wilson, a longtime and beloved science teacher at Jayton, deploys every JGISD student from pre-K to senior, every teacher, every staff member, even school board trustees for one sole purpose—to help their Jayton neighbors and community beautify their hometown.

FBC’s Edwards accepts call to Pottsboro

After six years as pastor of Jayton’s First Baptist Church, Rev. Jake Edwards has accepted a call to the Georgetown Baptist Church in Pottsboro, Texas, near Denison on the Oklahoma border north of Dallas. The departure of the Edwards family on May 23 will leave a gap not only in the church’s pulpit, but in numerous community roles— including that of executive director of the Sparrow’s Nest Maternity Home, an initiative spearheaded in recent years by Edwards’ wife, Tricia.

Spur approves Argo option for swimming pool

At a special called meeting Wednesday, April 10, 2022, the Spur City Council reviewed options for design of its swimming pool as provided Monday night by donor Argo Blockchain.

It was a beautiful evening for Golf Scramble Tuesday! Thankfully, the wind/dirt was not blowing 50 miles per hour! Can I get a hallelujah and an amen for that blessing? Four teams were formed, with two places being paid out.

‘Texas Writes’ coming to Spur May 14

Texas Writes, a statewide program from the Writers’ League of Texas that brings accomplished authors to rural libraries for a half day focused on the craft of writing, will be in Spur Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Dickens County-Spur Public Library.
