New books, new readers at the Spur library

Thank you to all who supported the Friends of the Library this past week during our Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Supper fundraiser. The fundraiser was a huge success. We would like to especially thank James Robinson at Lawrence Brothers for donating the groceries and Jimmy Whitefield at Cap Rock Telephone Cooperative for donating the water.

Spur Senior Citizens

The Spur Senior Citizens Center, located at 210 Burlington Ave., will be serving a noon meal Monday through Friday. The dining room is open, or if you feel more comfortable during the Covid-19 pandemic, we are offering a curbside lunch you can reserve by calling (806) 271-4472. A donation is always appreciated. The cost for seniors over 60 is $4; everyone else is always welcome, for $8.

MATADOR—Josie Raetz, age 76, passed away on May 1, 2022, in Matador, Texas. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2022 at the Church of Christ, Matador. Visitation was held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Moore-Rose Funeral Home, Floydada. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.

Melvin Clifton Owens, Jr., 1952–2022

Melvin Clifton Owens, Jr., was born October 27, 1952 in Lubbock, Texas, to Melvin C. Owens, Sr., and Ethel Jo Dozier Owens. Melvin attended first through fifth grade at George R. Bean Elementary in Lubbock. The family then moved to Spur, Texas, where his mother was raised; there he finished school, graduating from Spur High School in 1971.

Congrats go to Jayton Jaybirds Daylee Chisum and Kamryn Nail on finishing as regional champion and runner-up in the 3200m run. Both have qualified to compete at the State track meet Thursday–Saturday, May 12–14, at the Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.

A newspaper’s comics section does not hold the fascination it once did to a child. Families in the 1960s and 1970s made a dash for the printed frame-by-frame jokes or stories. On Sunday, they were in color, which made for a holy war before church. We took up arms, literally, to fight over who got to read the Sunday funnies before the other siblings. There was excitement for children learning to read because it meant access to the funny paper.
