JAYTON TO STATE Congrats go to Jayton Jaybirds Daylee Chisum and Kamryn Nail on finishing as regional champion and runner-up in the 3200m run. Both have qualified to compete at the State track meet Thursday– Saturday, May 12–14, at the Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.

One of the area’s largest community improvement projects has been happening every May in Jayton since 2014. “The Big Event,” the brainchild of the late Mike Wilson, a longtime and beloved science teacher at Jayton, deploys every JGISD student from pre-K to senior, every teacher, every staff member, even school board trustees for one sole purpose— to help their Jayton neighbors and community beautify their hometown. This year’s “Big Event” is Tuesday, May 17.

After six years as pastor of Jayton’s First Baptist Church, Rev. Jake Edwards has accepted a call to the Georgetown Baptist Church in Pottsboro, Texas, near Denison on the Oklahoma border north of Dallas. The departure of the Edwards family on May 23 will leave a gap not only in the church’s pulpit, but in numerous community roles— including that of executive director of the Sparrow’s Nest Maternity Home, an initiative spearheaded in recent years by Edwards’ wife, Tricia.
