Grub infestations and how to treat them

Last week’s column discussed those unpleasant and damaging grubs, the larval stage of the Junebug. As grubs feed on root systems of garden plants and turfgrass they are destructive and can cause serious damage to lawns and crop plants when left unchecked.

Spur library welcomes readers to join Friends group

We don’t say thank you enough to everyone who donates their time, their books, and their money to the library. If you would like to join the Friends of the Library we would love to have you. Annual membership dues are $5 for an individual, $10 for a family, and $50 for a business. The Spur Senior Citizens Center, located at 210 Burlington Ave., will be serving a noon meal Monday through Friday. The dining room is open, or if you feel more comfortable during the Covid-19 pandemic, we are offering a curbside lunch you can reserve by calling (806) 271-4472. A donation is always appreciated. The cost for seniors over 60 is $4; everyone else is always welcome, for $8.

Palace Theater finishing repairs, preparing for new season

Movie fans will be happy to know that Spur’s historic Palace Theater has completed repairs following the February winter storm damage—and is also taking the oopportunity of the hiatus to install a new, insulated ceiling with the goal of showing movies again in June.

Amarillo-area boy drowns in White River Lake Sunday

An eleven-year-old boy from the Amarillo area was playing near the water on the east side of White River Lake near Campground #1 Sunday morning with family members when he fell in and drowned, according to White River Lake police chief Jimmy Isbell.

1929 MASONIC LODGE Today, at what used to be 426 Burlington Avenue in Spur, you could roll a bowling ball right through the front of this space and it would keep on going out the back door. But in 1929 it was a grand new two-story headquarters for the Spur Masonic Lodge upstairs and an automobile showroom downstairs. Other businesses have also occupied the first floor over the years.
