Harris, Lovell retire after combined 56 years of at SPEC

Elaine Lovell and Melva Harris, both of Spur retired this year after a combined 56 years serving the membership of South Plains Electric Cooperative. Elaine Lovell retired April 3 after serving the members for 25 years. Elaine worked at the co-op’s office in Spur as a member service representative. Melva Harris retired July 10 after serving tmembers for 31 years as member service supervisor in the Spur office. South Plains Electric Cooperative, a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative, serves more than 60,000 connected meters in all or part of 18 counties. Taco time to benefit Spur library July 21

The Friends of the Library are hosting a taco lunch Tuesday July 21. This will be carry-out, or for orders of 5 or more we will deliver in town. There will be no dine-in available. Our Spur bulldog blue, gold, and white facemask order was finalized on July 15. If there is enough interest we will be doing another order. Watch our social media pages for more information. We are having our annual book sale in the lobby of the library, with more titles available in the paperback room. We have had a lot of new donated books lately. There must have been quite a bit of spring cleaning done during the covid-19 closures. The Palace Theater will be showing “Urban Cowboy” on July 25 at 7:00 p.m. They will be having a contest for those dressing as their favorite character from the movie. The library has the book “Urban Cowboy” by our own Aaron Latham. Latham also did the screenplay for the movie.

Area schools plan mid-August in-person start dates—as of now

Area superintendents at Spur, Jayton and Patton Springs public schools emphasized that their industry guidance for best practices for Covid-19 remain fluid. But as of right now, all three area schools plan to open for students in mid-August.
