Lions Club International in July provided recognition for Kent County Lions Club member Eddie Morales, for 35 years of service. Serving in a variety of leadership roles, including club president, Morales has donated his time and resources to ensure that the local club has given back to the community through improvement projects and fund-raisers that benefited youth as well as recreational and fellowship opportunities. He has been faithful to attend not only these events, but also to the bi-weekly meetings of the organization at which he ensures the meal is provided and the room set up. Club president Daryl Ham presented Morales with his recognition notice.

CrossView Christian Camp in Dickens hosted “CrossView Playday” on Saturday, July 18. Funded by the Betenbough Giving Team, CrossView was able to host the groups that had previously signed up for weeks of camp before the outbreak of coronavirus.

Okra likes it hot

A vegetable crop that thrives when temperatures soar is okra. Gardeners who are familiar with the ever-present West Texas agronomic crop, cotton, will recognize the similarity between cotton and okra blossoms. Okra and cotton are both members of the Malvaceae (mallow) family. The other well-known ornamental flowering plant that is also in the Malvaceae family is the hibiscus. Unlike cotton and hibiscus, okra has the added benefit of producing edible pods.

Spur Farmers’ Market back at Rickels Park this Saturday

The highly popular Spur Farmers’ Market is back this Saturday, August 1, 2020, returning to Rickels Park on Burlington Avenue in downtown Spur. It moved to Swenson Park in July to complement the Big Dog BBQ Cook-off.
