‘The Day of The Incumbent’ in Spur elections May 1

May 1 was a day for incumbents in Spur City Council and school board races. Despite the challenges of a complete turnover in the city’s police department, a water infrastructure crippled during Texas’s historic freeze in February, and a range of recurring issues from animal control to downtown revitalization, city council office-holders were given a massive show of support by Spur constituents at the ballot box.

The Jayton High School One Act Play company performed their production of “Treasure Island” at the State UIL One Act Play competition in Corsicana Friday. Erielle Coulter, a junior, was selected for All Star Cast for her performance as Jim Hawkins.

From left: Katie Lackey, secretary; Jake Edwards, president; Gina Coulter, treasurer; Daryl Ham, 2nd vice-president; and not pictured, Shirley Long, 1st vice-president. The Lions Club continues to grow and support community improvement and service projects, and invites any and all who are interested to join them for regular meetings on the second and fourth Mondays at 12 noon in the community center in Jayton.

School will soon break for the summer, and kids will be home with time on their hands. A garden of their very own can keep them occupied. A personal “Kid’s Garden” gets young people outside in the fresh air, keeps them active, and is a great way to combine exercise and learning as they plan, plant and care for their personal plot. The young guys can grow what they like or experiment with some new vegetable and at harvest time plan meals from produce picked from their own garden.
